I think this is a severely underrated album. It's the transitory album between SPITA and HF. It's when KB moves into his more groove, bass-line oriented psych pop phase with obvious tracks like Wraith Pinned to The Mist and Other Games, The Party's Crashing Us, and Oslo in the Summertime standing out. We also see Kevin use the synth a lot on this album, and the first departure from the lo-fi sound of the first five or so albums.I see this album as of Montreal's 808s & Heartbreak from a production/composition standpoint. You can see the foundations of Hissing Fauna in this album, yet not perfected like Hissing Fauna.

Much like 808s and MBDTF (by Kanye West, for those unsure). 808s was also Kanye delving into synth as a primary source of sound for the first time, and we can hear synth prominently on this album in a lot of its catchier arrangements.Further, some of the lyrics on this are the most. Of any album since KB met Nina while also exploring his own emotions, and I think that's nice because while I love Kevin's darkness, it's good to see that he can see the light at times too when making music.I love this album a lot. I can relate on a lot of tracks particularly I Was Never Young.

Goodness me, that song is amazing. I've always been an 'old soul' (contrary to my username) and never really enjoyed childhood like the other kids I knew and was friends with.I put this album in my top 3 favorites by of Montreal. There's just something whimsically appealing while also confronting serious topics. Love love love it. I totally agree with your statements about this album and will add that it was my first exposure to oM, so it does hold some special value to me for that alone.I would add, though, it feels like the album 'finishes' at 'The Repudiated Immortals' and the other songs, 'Art Snob Solutions,' 'The Actor's Opprobrium,' 'Keep Sending Me Black Fireworks,' and 'Every Day Feels Like Sunday' sound more like tacked-on bonus tracks.

Not that I don't love them (especially 'Opprobrium'), but they don't flow with the rest of the album to me.
